Jan. 6 evidence released by Trump judge is heavily redacted

A federal judge has released over 1,800 pages of documents related to the election interference case against Donald Trump. This release follows a motion by special counsel Jack Smith that included new evidence against Trump. Despite objections from Trump's lawyers, the documents were made public by United States District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan.

The documents include an appendix to the previously unsealed motion by Smith, which argues that Trump is not immune from criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The released documents contain heavily-redacted records, including parts of Trump's phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

Trump's attorneys attempted to delay the release of the documents until after the 2024 presidential election, but their arguments were rejected by Judge Chutkan. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges against him in the case.

The evidence released on Friday includes a detailed draft of a memo by former Trump legal adviser John Eastman, in which he outlined a plan to overturn the election results in six swing states. The documents also include pages from former Vice President Mike Pence's book, in which Pence describes Trump pressuring him to block the certification of President Joe Biden's election win.

Additionally, the released evidence includes a transcript of an interview with former Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, who described hanging up on Trump after refusing his request to ignore the state's Biden electors. The evidence also includes an FBI transcript of Trump's January 6 speech, in which he urged his supporters to march to the Capitol building.

The documents also contain hundreds of tweets from Trump's personal Twitter account, including tweets related to the January 6 protest and riot. This release of evidence provides further insight into the ongoing legal battle surrounding Trump's alleged election interference.
