Back pain is a common issue that many individuals experience due to various reasons. Dr. Santhosh A. Thomas, a staff physician at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Spine Health, explains that back pain can be caused by muscle pain, bone pain, or nerve pain. While certain activities like moving heavy objects or hiking can lead to temporary back discomfort, chronic back pain may indicate a more serious underlying issue.

According to experts, back pain can be triggered by simple, repetitive daily habits done with poor posture, underlying physical health conditions, mental health conditions, lack of movement or exercise, an exercise routine that is too intense, sleeping position, and smoking. These factors can contribute to back pain and discomfort.

Incorporating movement, improving posture, and adopting a gentle exercise routine like tai chi or chair yoga can help alleviate back pain. Additionally, addressing underlying physical or mental health conditions, changing sleep positions, and quitting smoking can also be beneficial in managing back pain.

When back pain becomes severe and starts to interfere with daily activities, seeking medical advice is recommended. Treatment options may include physical therapy, medication, cortisone injections, or surgery, depending on the severity of the condition. Overall, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, staying active, and seeking professional help when needed are crucial steps in managing back pain effectively.
